White has to be the most widely used color when it comes to modern interior design. Even for older interior designs where it wasn’t a dominant color, it was used for ceilings and places like the bathroom in some cases. These days, a number of Interior Designers tend to suggest it and recommend it to clients looking to furnish their own due to its clean, pristine nature and illusion it gives a space. A discussion with an interior designer we previously featured on this page and she highlighted the following reasons why white is the color of first choice when designing a home:
It gives an illusion of a bigger space
White is the perfect color if you intend to open up a space and make it look bigger. It is perfect for living room spaces, offices spaces and even bedrooms in some cases. If you have a small space to furnish, white may just be your color of choice for this reason.
It gives a blank canvas
With white, you do not have to worry too much about switching things up in a space. It is easier to change the theme of your interior design if your space is painted white because it matches almost all themes depending on how elements are staged.
It is perfect for contrasts
White also pairs well with other bold colors like red, blue, green because it contrasts beautifully with them. It can also be paired with other neutral or dull colors to give a calming and soothing vibe.
It gives a clean look
This is the case especially for spaces that tend to be breeding ground for germs like the bathroom and kitchen. Because they constantly have to be clean, white helps to reveal any stain quickly and easily.
The reasons highlighted are great and should be considered when picking out colors for a new home but we can also agree that there are some downsides to having a space in white. We have shared some below:
It may be hard to maintain
As much as we love the pros of painting your house white, it is sadly one of the hardest colors to maintain especially when there are younger children living in the house. You constantly have to clean or repaint as frequently as possible to ensure that it stays clean and presentable.
It can be impractical
Not all spaces are receptive to white. A house with many inhabitants for instance may not thrive well if it is painted white than a house with less people living in it.
